Congratulations!! You have a business headshot session scheduled with a professional photographer- now, what? Well, first of all please know that most photographers realize that most people are not very excited about getting their headshot done. I had one client liken it to going to the dentist! I can promise you it's not that bad!! :) (I mean no ill-will towards all the amazing dentists out there!) So either you have realized it is time to update your headshot and it's time to invest in yourself or, your employer is requiring it. Either way, you know you want to look and feel your best! So here are my 5 main tips on how to do exactly that!
- 1. Utilize the Style Consult- most photographers will offer some type of style consult either via email, telephone or in-person. Remember, the photographer is experienced in this area and wants you to look good just as much as you do. The tips that the photographer shares with you are so valuable and can make the difference between a great headshot and a terrible one. If your photographer does not offer a style consult at the point of sale- call her or him prior to the session date and ask for any suggestions he or she may have in terms of styling (wardrobe) and hair and make-up.
- 2.Decide in advance what "look" you are going for. Is it a more relaxed casual, business look or a very formal business look? Do you want to show that you are very serious and professional yet trusting or do you want to show a more laid back, fun yet professional side of yourself? (Whatever your profession is should help determine this.)
- 3. Consider getting professional hair and make up for your session if it's not already included. A great make-up artist will know how to apply make up in a very professional / business way that will just give your images that finished, polished look. Remember, pro hair and make-up is not only for weddings and balls!!! Yes, this raises your costs - but it's time to treat and invest in yourself- you won't regret it!
- 4. Clothing: Wear solid colors with texture and keep patterns very minimal. Consider 3/4 length sleeves and/or layers. Accessorize with jewelry!!
- 5. Relax and trust your photographer! It is your photographer's job to make you look and feel your best in your portraits. An experienced photographer will know how to work with you to help you relax during your session, have fun and bring out your true personality!
If you do not have a headshot session planned- when is the last time you updated your headshot? Is it over 2 years old? Does it look like who you really are? Have you had a massive change since your last headshot, i.e., weight loss/gain, hair cut or color difference? Remember, your headshot is considered the new handshake in this digital world we live in. You may not realize this, but having a headshot that does not match what you currently look like can hurt trust in a potential business relationship.
